Remember

There are many horrible things that have happened and continue to happen on a daily basis. We are being deluged with “Flooding the Zone”. This is a list of some of them. As difficult as it is we need to remember.

Administrative Actions

ICE used a 5 year old and a 17 year old as bait to deport their parents. He and his parents are here legally seeking asylum and are following the asylum rules.

President Trump tried to convict Senator Kelly and 5 other congresspeople for sedition and treason for saying troops can decline to perform something that is unconstitutional. Service troops can and must decline to perform something that is unconstitutional. President Trump is intimidating elected congresspersons with the DOJ.

President Trump posted a video with Michelle and Barack Obama’s photo on apes.

Gordie Howe International Bridge President Trump just threatened to stop the bridge from being opened unless he gets 50% ownership. The bridge is completed. It was paid for by Canada. It is jointly owned by Canada and Detroit. Its competition is the Ambassador Bridge owned by Matthew Moroun who is a President Trump supporter.

Renee Good shooting in Minneapolis Renee Good was shot 3 times, 2 of which were through the driver side passenger window. DHS stopped the investigation of the ICE agent who did the shooting by the local Minneapolis FBI office and told them to, instead, investigate the wife of Renee Good for possibly being a domestic terrorist. Her last words were to an ICE agent “I’m not mad at you”.

Alex Pretti shooting in Minneapolis Alex Pretti was shot for helping a protestor who had been shoved down by an ICE agent. He was shot 10 times while on his knees. His last words were to the person he was helping “Are you okay?”.

Greenland President Trump threatened to take over Greenland and did not rule out by using military force. Needless to say, Greenland, Denmark and all of Canada and Europe objected.

Continual use of the DOJ to prosecute President Trump’s political enemies

President Trump calls Somalians garbage. Dehumanizing immigrants.

Refusal to release all the Epstein files. Reacting names of clients, not just victims. 1000 women raped over years and no clients have been prosecuted. 3 million documents remain unreleased and many of the released documents are heavily redacted.

Killed 80 Venezuelans to kidnap the president of Venezuela, Nicholas Maduro, for violating US law. The express purpose of the attack as stated by President Trump was to take the Venezuelan oil. The money from the proceeds of the oil are not being put in the US Treasury or a US bank but a private bank in Saudi Arabia. Venezuela has drug cartels that predominantly deal in cocaine not heroin and fentanyl (which mostly comes from China).

Questioned whether he would support NATO instead of ardently supporting article 5 of NATO. Does the rest of NATO still think we have their back? Maybe having your back is light years different than actually having your back.

USAID was ended causing hundreds of thousands of deaths around the world. USAID built a network of providers in remote areas to distribute food and medical aid to poorer areas. It was abruptly ended dismantling that network that took years to build.

Thousands of federal workers were fired. The US lost scientists and research programs that will take years to rebuild. Knowledge for medical research and weather research lost in a flash.

Climate change declared a hoax. We and our children will be paying for this decades.

Coal regulations relaxed, emitting mercury and other heavy metals permitted. Everyone, mostly our kids, will suffer needlessly.

Legislation

Ask your state senators to vote NO on HCS HJR 173 & 174 which essentially swaps state income tax (65% of state revenue) for sales tax.

  • The Missouri Budget Project reports the 2/3 of Missourians would see higher taxes via sales taxes on everything including services – like haircuts, home and car maintenance. Even gas could have an additional 8.5% sales tax applied to it. Only the very wealthy would get a tax cut. The swap of income tax for sales tax would result in cuts to education, local government services and communities. This upside-down tax takes from the poor to give to the rich.
  • Email or call your State Senator and ask that they oppose this scheme. Brian.Williams@senate.mo.gov : tracy.mccreery@senate.mo.gov, angela.mosley@senate.mo.gov
  • Share this information with friends on social media.

It was an incredible day – 8 million people participated nationwide at 3300 locations. Missouri had 50 events in towns/cities across the state. Amazing!! I hope you felt the JOY of seeing so many who felt the same.

So now,  ‘ WHAT’S NEXT”.

As a representative of North County Democratic Club, I am inviting you to get involved. Newsletters like this, will alert you to upcoming events where we hear from candidates, hear about legislation being considered and find out about other nationwide events. We hope you will join us.

Mark your calendar now. Thank you.

I hope your Memorial Day Weekend was good, as we paid tribute to those who served and gave the ultimate sacrifice for this country and our freedom. Thank you to ALL of our veterans!

Memorial Day began May 30, 1868, in remembrance of the many many people who died during the civil war. Ordinary people gave their lives in order to preserve and keep this country – united and committed to the American principle that ALL are created equal. A principle that said NO to slavery!

Currently this country appears to be embroiled in similar philosophical wars.  The super rich are bribing their way – to mergers, to less regulation, to unfettered data center growth while receiving tax cuts paid for with cuts to  Medicaid and food stamps. The government is eliminating DEI programs and legislative seats for people of color.

Prices for essential goods, like gas & meat, are out of sight. Missouri Republicans gerrymandered Congressional districts for Trump, are trying to destroy the people’s initiative petition process and are seeking to reestablish a total ban on abortion!

Will the POWER of the wealthy elite be able to crush the POWER OF THE PEOPLE?

 WE SAY NO!!

The August 4th election will be one of THE MOST CONSEQUENTIAL elections in history because of two amendments: Amendments 4 and Amendment 5.

Amendment 4, if passed, will eliminate the initiative petition (IP) process in Missouri. The measure raises the bar so high as to make it impossible to pass. Missourians have used the IP process many times to pass important legislation like the ACA Healthcare, the ban on Right to Work and overturning the total abortion ban. This is an important tool used by citizens when the Missouri legislature refuses to act on needed legislation.

Vote NO on Amendment 4.

Amendment 5 is a bait & switch effort to substitute income taxes for sales taxes on EVERYTHING- EVERYTHING may include taxes on childcare, rent, real estate purchases etc as well as the items we buy. This measure shifts the burden of paying taxes from the wealthy to low-income earners.  The Mo Budget Project estimates that 80% of Missourian will see a tax increase via increased sales taxes should this amendment pass. The measure also puts local governments in a chokehold, limiting their funding levels.

Vote NO on Amendment 5.

We are encouraging everyone to remind friends and family to vote against Amendment 4 & 5 this August. If you are willing to take a yard sign that says:  “VOTE NO on Amendments 4 &5”, text 314-570-7677 or email Margo@NorthCountyDemocrats.org . Please include your address. Yard signs will be distributed in mid July.

Those not registered to vote can do so until July 8th  and vote in August. See below for more voting information.

North County Democrats are seeking volunteers to work the polls to defeat Amendment 4 & 5 during early voting and on August 4th. Please email Margo@NorthCountyDemocrats.org.

The assaults on the Constitution, the chaos of tariffs & deportations are hugely unpopular. That means that 2026 is going to be an unpredictable election year. Anything may happen! Anything!  That unpredictability is an opportunity for Democrats – If we are ready to act, ready to donate, Ready to ‘JUST DO SOMETHING!”.

In a huge WIN for the People of Missouri, the Missouri Supreme Court ruled to BLOCK state officials from using the Republicans’ new gerrymandered MAPS in the November midterms. Congressman Cleaver, whose 5th congressional district was divided, said of Thursday’s ruling,  “ Democracy prevails!!.”

Of course, Attorney General Hanaway has promised to immediately ask the US Supreme Court to intervene, and Governor Kehoe has stated he will continue to stand behind the gerrymandered maps as ‘the legal process moves forward.” These and other shenanigans undertaken by Missouri’s Secretary of State, Attorney General and Governor have created a constitutional crisis for the voters of this state. (BTW: All decisions need to be in place by September 8, which is the deadline for items being placed on the November ballot. This is a wait and see moment.)

Despite these shenanigans, North County Democrats are continuing to educate, register voters and help democratic candidates flip seats this November. At the September meeting we will cover candidates running, Amendments on the ballot and hear from Sarah Felts of Missouri Voter Protection on how to safeguard our vote and keep elections free and fair.

North County Democrats will continue to register voters until the deadline on October 7th.  Our club will walk in the St Ann parade and Festival and have a booth at the Florissant Fall Festival. By being visual in the community, we hope to activate democrats and get more people to the polls. Join us at our meetings, at the parade and at the festivals – as you are able. Our motto is “Do Something”.  “Do Something” to make our democracy stronger and our state a better place to live.

Lastly, I want to note and honor several important people who have passed recently.

·       Locally, Reggie Jones was Mayor of Dellwood, director of the Herbert Hoover Club/ Boys and Girls Club of Greater St Louis and Democratic committeeman for Ferguson Township. With a lifetime of contributions to the St Louis community, he will be missed.

·       Nationally, two women icons, have passed – singer/song writer and philanthropist Dolly Parton and feminist, journalist and political activist, Gloria Steinem.

o   Dolly not only delighted Americans with her music but used her wealth to improve the lives of others. At least 850,000 children under 5 have received a book/month from Dolly’s Imagination Library.

o    Gloria Steinem was an advocate and spokeswomen for women’s equality and a founder of the National Women’s Political Caucus, which advocates

for more women in elected office. She was a role model for millions!

We salute these people – all who have had a profound impact of the lives of so many! We’ve been blessed with their influence.

This November’s election is so sooooo very important. Not only will it determine who controls Congress, but it is possible that the 20 year old Republican supermajority could be broken in the MO HOUSE & MO SENATE. In addition, there are important amendments on the ballot that if passed would reinstate a total ban on abortion, siphon off scarce revenue to an elusive income tax endowment fund and cause Missouri to lose a Democratic seat in the Kansas City area – to name a few. (See flyers below)

The calendar below has a list of events that North County Democrats are participating in. New to this list is Saturday, October 17th, NO KINGS/Vote Early Day. More about that event later.

The next North County Democrat meeting is Thursday, October 8 at the Sports Café, 6:30p. Hope to see you there. FYI: North County Democrat Club is using a newly designed logo in this newsletter. Thank you to designer – Larry Davis.

ICE raids in the St Louis area.

Recently, a neighbor contacted me asking for the name of an immigration attorney. Her friend, Cata is married to an Afghan and together they have 4 children, including a newborn. Recently, her husband disappeared while jogging in their Maryland Heights neighborhood. They discovered that he was detained by ICE, even thorough he has legal and permanent status. Because he was a US military translator, he cannot be returned to Afghanistan. His detainment has put the family in crisis.

This immigration arrest is not out of the ordinary. Missouri detains immigrants at the 4th highest rate in the nation. ICE is operating quietly now and is making it very difficult to locate those detained by ICE. It’s a terrible situation.

FYI: Cata’s sister created a go fund me page. Those willing to donate can respond to this email and a link will be sent.

The Events Calendar below has detailed information needed. Hope to see some of you at these events.

Missouri Republicans are continuously showing us how deceptive, incompetent and partisan they can be. This week Senator Eric Schmitt tried to trap Trump’s former prosecuting attorney, Jack Smith, while testifying before the Senate Judiciary Committee. Schmitt accused Smith of perjury and went on to call him a Dirtbag. Before it was over, Schmitt’s lies and shenanigans were revealed to the nation. Embarrassing!! This is just one more reason that Missouri needs CHANGE . Missouri’s Republicans need to learn that they work for US!!  Vote Blue!
